Bringing a Black-led Birth Center and Movement Home for Grassroots Organizations to Life in Boston.
As members of funder networks committed to resourcing movements for justice and liberation, we’re excited and inspired by the vision of Community Movement Commons (CMC). Join us on Saturday, May 18th in Jamaica Plain to learn more about the project, build intergenerational community across our networks, and explore opportunities to resource CMC in the near and long term.
CMC has been in the planning phases for the last few years to build a community-centered, multi-purpose space, hosting grassroots organizations and Boston’s first Birth Center together. CMC is anchored by Center for Economic Democracy (CED), Movement Sustainability Commons (MSC), Neighborhood Birth Center (NBC), Resist, and Sisters Unchained, and Matahari Women Workers’ Center recently joined as a partner.
In 2023, CMC purchased a plot of land in Roxbury’s Nubian Square for a campus with shared offices, movement/community space, outdoor green areas, and the Birth Center. This long-sought vision for a space where all people are nourished, land is green and sacred, and the space is led and governed by those most affected by structural oppression will be a reality in 2025.
CMC is proud to have raised $11 million of their $12.5M overall capital budget (84%) from gifts, equity, anticipated New Market Tax Credits, and 0% interest loans that are either in hand or on the way. Early supporters of the project include Kataly Foundation, Chordata Capital, the City of Boston, Boston Medical Center, You Have Our Trust, and individual/family donors. CMC is raising $1.5 million over the next 6 months. While this event is not a traditional fundraiser, we plan to follow up with participants to discuss resourcing opportunities.
