Hi! I’m Jasmine (王杰敏). I’m moving back to SF and looking to organize a weekly low-cost get-together & dinner for Asian-American folks relearning and healing their relationship to Mandarin Chinese. We might have specific dinners for inviting folks from other cultural backgrounds who are learning, and might change this policy in the future, but initially I’m imagining this space as one for people with at least some Asian heritage, since there’s a lot of trauma and context with language learning that’s unique to Mandarin being our mother tongue.
I’m envisioning a weekly potluck where people bring a favourite homemade dish (or storebought / takeout totally cool), but it’d be lovely to compile an expanding digital cookbook of dishes brought to these dinners as a collective artifact (I certainly need one in Chinglish!). Dumplings, sesame balls, pork buns, broccoli with garlic, mushrooms.. anything!
If you’re too busy, you don’t even need to bring Chinese food - just something! **The only requirement is that the whole dinner, you speak only in Mandarin, from the moment you cross the threshold to when you leave the house.** We’ll speak with any roommates at houses we host at to preserve the sanctity of the space. We’ll probably cap each dinner at 12 attendees, although I expect we’d have around 6 folks each week.
很快见 (see you soon!),
Jasmine Wang
