Art, Empathy, and Ethics: Examining Kara Walker's Legacy in Context Join our lovely BGIAS DMV hosts, Dr. Michelle-May Curry and Adama Kamara, on Saturday, November 18th, from 3:30PM-6PM for a critical discussion and art-making session engaging the current ethics and legacy of artist Kara Walker’s work. Kara Walker’s work has long been considered incendiary in both content and its positioning within art museums and cultural institutions internationally. Her latest exhibition, “Back of Hand” at the de la Cruz Gallery, is no different in its exploration of the violence that undergirds the legacy of the South. How do we, as a community of Black creatives and art lovers, ethically engage with artists like Kara Walker, who boldly explore the vulgar and erotic while centering their Black subjects? The afternoon will begin with a guided tour led by de la Cruz staff and a short film by Walker, followed by a group discussion and drawing session.
