At the heart of the novel is Francine Stevenson. At twenty-five, she is stuck working a dead-end job and living at home with her mother, an agoraphobic YouTube psychic. Prone to making one bad decision after another, adulthood has not turned out the way she had imagined. When a tragic event upends her world, Francine’s life takes another turn when she rescues 10-year-old Davie from neighborhood bullies. Odd but endearing, and full of quirky facts, the two make an unlikely duo and to her surprise, Davie keeps showing up day after day. But things become more complicated when Francine realizes that Davie’s foster mom is Jeannette Tomlin, her high school crush. As her attachment to Davie grows and she reconnects with Jeannette, Francine finds herself sliding down a destructive path. Can she stop herself from making another bad decision? More importantly, can she become the kind of person Davie can depend on?
