Join artist Maryam (Maya) Tohidi for an intimate exploration of the core themes of her current exhibition 'Fragments of Home: An Immigrant's Tapestry’, at 5 Olive Gallery.
This gathering honors the universal challenges of home and belonging, particularly resonant in a transient city like San Francisco. Going beyond a typical artist talk, we will transform the gallery into a shared space for connection, reflection, and creation.
Maryam (Maya) will begin by discussing her artistic process, the symbolic significance of the Persian rug and the layered narratives woven through her artwork. She will share her personal journey and challenges in constructing a sense of ‘home’, despite having to flee her childhood home during a war, immigration during adolescence, and constant change ever since.
The audience will be invited to participate in a collective exploration of what makes a home. Participants will be provided with pen and paper to draw or write their own personal reflections around the core themes of this exhibit. Their contributions can include personal memories, feelings, challenges and hopes related to the elusive nature of 'home.'
To create a safe and inclusive space, a rug will be placed in the center of the room. Participants will have the option to:
- Only share their drawings/writings or reflections, contributing to a collective tapestry of narratives
- Anonymously 'sweep' their contributions under the rug, to acknowledge and release challenging or personal reflections
