For the past eight years, we’ve been working to ban the sale of single-use cigarette filters locally. This would be more than just a win for Santa Cruz — it’s a unique opportunity for us to protect the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, and maintain our leadership as stewards of the sea.
We’ve got all the facts on our side, but we need your help to show up in person to make this happen. The message is clear to our County Supervisors: you're either with Santa Cruz — prioritizing the health of our ocean, environment, and community — or you're with Big Tobacco.
We have 2 of 5 County Supervisors on board and we only need one more. If we don’t pass this now, it will take another three years until this policy can be brought back to the board for consideration. The time
is now!
Can we count on you to be there?
🗓️ Tuesday, Oct. 8th at 9am
📍 SC County Building, 701 Ocean St, 5th floor
If you can take 10 minutes to collect as many ciggy butts in a jar or bag as you can, to bring to the county meeting (to show our supervisors the true gravity of this issue), that would be epic.
A few things you might want to know:
•25% of all trash on our beaches is from cigarette butts (gross, right?).
•Tobacco waste costs the city approximately $2 million a year to clean up.
•Only 6% of people smoke in Santa Cruz, but we’re all footing the bill.
•4.5 trillion cigarette butts are littered each year around the world — let’s change that.
If we don’t act now with bold policies to protect the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, we risk becoming just another suburb of San Jose. If not in Santa Cruz, where else will this happen?
Who's part of our Coalition you ask?
The Cigarette Surfboard, Save our Shores, Save the Waves, Surfrider Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Tobacco Education Coalition, Santa Cruz Waves & more. Please join us on October 8th to spark this wave of change.
