On June 6, 2003, 15-year-old Michael R. Holt was baptized against his family’s wishes and became a confirmed member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints — his “greatest work of performance art to date.” The teenage Mormon dove headfirst into the closet of America’s gayest cult, perfecting the personification of an ideal convert while masquerading as a missionary in Paraguay, before finally coming out and losing his virginity at 23. 21 years later, Holt returns to the stage for BOTTOMING FOR JESUS, an hour-long performance spanning stand up, cabaret, and queer religious revivalism. In this work, Holt shares his attempts and failures at living a purpose-driven life, promising a deep look inside the mind and heart of one of Los Angeles’ last “good gay white guys”. Directed by Spenser Theberge Produced by Family Affairs Studio This performance will take place in the Black Box Studio at LINT Studios. Please enter via the building lobby doors on Hope Street. BOTTOMING FOR JESUS was developed with support from Open Space, a creative container, contemporary dance company, and school located in the Kenton neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. Learn more at
