What is EMdash? EMdash is a bi-monthly calendar of NYC poetry events that has been publishing as emdashnyc on Substack and Instagram since July 2025. EMdash is comprised of Ash, Subin, and Jacob, who really like poetry.
The EMdash team wants to create a form of community-building and collaborative, decentralized reading that will occur between our featured readers. What this actually means is something we are calling “poetry two-stepping.” Here’s the premise: between readers, you have to get up, find someone in the room you have never met and read them some poetry. We will have two rounds, after the first reader and after the second. You read them one poem, they read you one poem. The poems can be your own poetry, a poem you like, or one of the many poems we will print out and provide at the front of the room.
We are making it sound more complicated than it actually is.. come !! Be earnest !! There will be lots of free wine and free espresso martinis, courtesy of Cafe Truman.
