We are happy to host a healing circle in conjunction with the art show “This Is What We Carry”. This circle is specifically for those who identify as having experienced religious trauma. The night will be semi-structured conversation, led by artist Geneva Hutchinson and artist-in-residence and therapist Casey VanderStel. Participants are invited to bring an art or craft they are working on, or to pick out a small project provided by the hosts. The circle will involve sharing a discussion of emotions and experiences related to our religious pasts, but participants will be encouraged to engage at a level of vulnerability that feels comfortable to them. The space will open an hour before the circle starts for any participants who would like to explore the 40+ artworks installed around this 100 year old church building. This show contains themes of religious and spiritual trauma, sexual trauma, homophobia and transphobia, some nudity and graphic images, and other heavy themes, and may not be suitable for children. Casey, the Artist-in-Residence at the church St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Logan Square, is coordinating and curating this show. Please reach out to them if you have questions about this project! (caseyvstelstudio@gmail.com) Though the art show and program is being hosted through and in a progressive Christian church, the artwork is not necessarily pro-Christian, the show does not promote the Christian faith, and we work to welcome all diverse voices and perspectives that amplify values of care and love. The space is not wheelchair accessible but a ramp can be arranged if needed. 3 gender neutral bathrooms are available, but the bathroom are not ADA. There will be 1 air filter running in the space and masks provided at the door, but not mandatory. With other accessibility questions, contact Casey.
