16 miles in one day- Rachael DeWitt will attempt to swim the length of Skaneateles Lake
Date of the swim will be Tuesday, July 22nd, and start time will be 5:30am. I will be swimming North to South starting near the swim area in Clift Park in Skaneateles and ending at Grout Brook at the South end. Spectators can be picked up and shuttled out to the lake, watch from the eastern shore (I will hug the east side as I swim), or gather at the Gazebo near The Glen Haven for the last stretch in the 2:30-4pm window.
Reach out to Rachael’s Uncle: Wes Yeomans (518-813-3064) if you would like to be picked up to be shuttled out to observe the swim or would like to join with your own boat but are trying to figure out where on the lake we currently are. Boats should trail behind Rachael as she swims with minimal wake. If you can’t join in person, we’ll have a support crew member sending updates throughout the swim through this page.
After the swim, we hope to motor back up the lake to Clift park after the swim for a celebration.
The swim is a lifelong dream of mine and will also be a fundraiser for the Skaneateles Lake Association (SLA), an organization focused on conservation of the lake. I grew up on this lake, took my first strokes here, and have completed other open water swim races here. I’ve been involved with the Skaneateles Lake Association for many years from volunteering in middle school, working on the milfoil boats in high school, monitoring boats for invasive species as a lake steward in college, and becoming the first Executive Director of the SLA after college. The SLA is near to my heart and the work they do will help ensure the lake is swimmable, drinkable, clean, and pure for generations to come.
Please consider a donation to the SLA through the following link, any amount helps: https://skaneateleslake.org/swim/
