Welcome to the 4th installment (and 2025 opening!) of โจSound & Visionโจ, an outdoor summer screening series featuring a performance by a musical artist, followed by a film of their choosing.
For our fourth event, we have a performance by Oaklandโs Ghosts and Logic โ the latest project from singer-songwriter Eli Wise. He is a compelling performer who captivates audiences with his warmth, vulnerability, and humor. His songs are vignettes about transformation and the search for authenticity. At live shows, expect an invitation to be in conversation with the music. You will be invited to sing, to create rhythms, and to listen to stories. โEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mindโ (2004) asks โwhat if we could delete painful memories?โ The film itself is many things:
๐ the insightful script by Charlie Kaufman (Synecdoche NY, Adaptation) that imbues a philosophical sci-fi premise with emotional heft
โค๏ธ the gorgeous, dreamlike imagery from French director Michel Gondry (an extensive music video innovator) that leads us through a journey equally surreal and moving
๐งก the heart-tugging electroscoustic score by Jon Brion (Punch-Drunk Love, Ladybird) which cradles the story with intimate curiosity and warmth
๐ perhaps most memorably, the powerful performances from a forlorn Jim Carrey and impulsive Kate Winslet, who show us turbulent relationship trials with remarkable nuance and depth
Often regarded as one of the best films of the 21st century, the film offers us a profound reflection on love and memory โ an apt pairing for the vulnerable music of Ghosts and Logic.

โI just adore this film. I recently re-watched it, and from the first scene, I once again felt captivated and curious. Joel is lost, bereft and finds Clementine who is lost in her own very different way. Time is disjointed, memory is missing, but a spark is there and this sense that something deeper is right, even though they don't know how to express it. In addition to the sci-fi blending of lived experience and internal metaphors, the movie makes a beautiful statement about love. This idea that, even if I forgot all of my days with you, even if I lost every keepsake, if I found you again, that spark would still be there and we could start all over again.โ
