Growing up in LA, dim sum followed by mahjong was a weekly ritual. A group of five families would gather for dim sum lunch before caravanning to one of our homes for hours of mahjong that stretched into the wee hours of the morning.
Inspired by this tradition of ritual and gathering, we're launching the "First Sundays" series at Nin Hao: an afternoon to learn Hong Kong-style mahjong and connect with neighbors over dim sum and tea on the first Sunday of each month.
What to Expect:
1:45PM-3:30PM: Learning fundamentals and instruction over dim sum lunch
3:30PM-4:15PM: Practice play to apply what you've learned
Just as I learned this game as a way to hold onto community and tradition, this workshop offers more than just rules and strategy. It's an invitation to embrace the ritual of gathering, playing, and being together.
No prior knowledge needed, our workshop is designed for beginners, though experienced players are welcome to join and refresh their skills.
What to Expect:
🀄 Guided instruction on Hong Kong style mahjong fundamentals
🀄 Take-home cheat sheet to reference for future games
🀄 Hands-on practice in a supportive environment
🀄 Family-style dim sum lunch (shared between every 4 people) featuring: shrimp dumplings, shumai, char siu bao, steamed veggie dumplings, crispy shrimp, lo mai gai, pan-fried beef dumplings, and turnip cake
🀄 A pot of premium loose leaf Chinese tea to enjoy while you play
About Your Instructor:
Veronica Chan is the founder of Soft Side Social Club, where she hosts intimate workshops, salons and gatherings in collaboration with creative people and businesses to foster connection and community. She brings a warm, accessible approach to teaching this traditional game, making it approachable for newcomers while honoring its rich cultural heritage.
Important Details:
Payment: Your $30 ticket holds your spot and covers instruction. You'll pay $25 at the door for dim sum and tea. Total: $55
Refunds: The $30 lesson fee is non-refundable
Seating: Groups of four will share family-style dim sum together so unfortunately we cannot accommodate allergies or substitutions
Different Mahjong Styles: There are different rules and sets of tiles depending on the style you play. We will be learning and playing Hong Kong-style (the most popular Chinese mahjong style), not American-style.
3 clues to identify which style is which:
American: Sets include Joker tiles
Chinese (including Hong Kong): Sets do not include Joker tiles
American: Eligible winning hands change annually
Chinese (including Hong Kong): Rules and eligible winning hands do not change annually
American: Sometimes spelled Mahjongg, with two g's
Chinese: Typically spelled Mahjong, with one g
