Growing up in LA, dim sum followed by mahjong was a weekly ritual. A group of five families would gather for dim sum lunch before caravanning to one of our homes for hours of mahjong that stretched into the wee hours of the morning.
Inspired by this tradition of ritual and gathering, we're continuing the "First Sundays" series at Nin Hao, now with an all-you-can-eat dim sum buffet format that made its debut at our Lunar New Year celebration and was such a hit.
Come join us for an afternoon to learn Hong Kong-style mahjong and connect with neighbors over dim sum and tea.
*Note: This month falls on Easter Sunday, April 5th, just a heads up in case you have holiday plans to work around!*
What to Expect:
1:45PM to 3:30PM: Learning fundamentals and instruction over dim sum
3:30PM to 4:15PM: Practice play to apply what you've learned
Just as I learned this game as a way to hold onto community and tradition, this workshop offers more than just rules and strategy. It's an invitation to embrace the ritual of gathering, playing, and being together.
No prior knowledge needed, our workshop is designed for beginners, though experienced players are welcome to join and refresh their skills.

Different Mahjong Styles: We will be learning and playing Hong Kong-style (the most popular Chinese mahjong style), not American-style.
3 clues to identify which style is which:
American: Sets include Joker tiles
Chinese (including Hong Kong): Sets do not include Joker tiles
American: Eligible winning hands change annually
Chinese (including Hong Kong): Rules and eligible winning hands do not change annually
American: Sometimes spelled Mahjongg, with two g's
Chinese: Most often spelled Mahjong, with just one g
