An exhibit of recent works by artist Maya (Maryam) Tohidi, titled The Journey 'Home'. This will be the last show at Uzay Gallery - a historic artist live/work space - we are loosing our lease : (
Artist Statement
This exhibition is a personal reflection on my lifelong journey of finding 'home'. It traces a path from my childhood in Iran, immigration to Canada, the recent closing of my San Francisco home, and the forward journey to find home yet again.
The use of simple home-improvement materials speak to the fundamental labor inherent in building a 'home'. The Persian rug remains a central motif: in some works, it conceals what’s been “swept under the rug”; in others, it boldly weaves new narratives, painting a future rich with possibilities, reflecting my recent leap into a new chapter, after a long career in tech.
Personal narratives—fragments of memories, poetry, journal entries and wishes for the future—are written onto the canvas and layered within the mixed-media works, providing the personal thread that weaves it all together. Combining the intricate patterns of the rug, with words in Farsi and English, and personally meaningful objects, highlight the tension between tradition and transformation, honoring cultural roots while embracing the ever-evolving journey of self-discovery and belonging.
Created both in my studio and on-site during a short and sweet artist residency at Uzay Gallery, these pieces allow the evolving definition of 'home' to be shaped by the immediate environment. This exhibition also marks a bittersweet moment as it is the last at Uzay Gallery's current location, as they too are being pushed out of their long-time home.
We hope you can join us to celebrate the closing of some chapters and the opening of others.
