EBPG Summer Campout: Woodland Restoration and Off-grid Homestead Management, Ukiah
Come join the EBPG for its first (hopefully of many) overnight campouts/work parties! We will be hosted by Chris, an arborist and technical climber by trade, at his 55 acre off-grid homestead in the mountains of Ukiah (2.5 hr drive from Oakland/East Bay). Chris gives us a tour of his land and some of the seasonal considerations related to managing and living on the property, which include his home, a yurt for gathering, a portable mill next door, biochar capabilities, and more.
The weekend will include skill shares and work opportunities, including pre-burn planning and preparation, creek restoration and invasive removal. Gluten free and vegetarian meals and snacks will be provided for Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Sunday breakfast ($40 donation).
This campout coincides with a Prescribed Burn Site Plan workshop given by the Prescribed Burn Association on Saturday, which is free and open to all who are interested.
We are hoping to make this an ongoing site for workshops, if this first one goes well. There are opportunities for tree removal, lumber milling, and biochar on site depending on seasonality and interest of attendees in the future.
Schedule:
Finer programming details are still being worked out, but a basic flow of the weekend is as follows:
Friday Evening:
Arrive, Set up Camp, Potluck?
Please plan on providing your own food and water for Friday evening. We may try and coordinate a potluck once we have folks registered.
Saturday: Breakfast before 8:30, Work for a few hours. 10 am is the burn site plan workshop for those who want to attend. Lunch around noon, siesta to beat the heat, and some more work on the land in the late afternoon. After dinner (7ish), we will gather and there will be much joy.
Sunday Morning: Breakfast, Break down camp, Work, Depart.
Site Conditions:
Tent camping, prepare for hot and dry conditions, especially in the early afternoon. Plenty of spring water for drinking, food prep and basic washing, but showering not likely. We are working on a plan to get to a watering hole of some sort at the end of day Saturday.
Cost:
No cost besides the meal plan.
