Tai Chi & Qi Gong: Vitality, Resilience & Inner Attunement with Manak Khamvongsa Tai chi and Qigong are internal energy arts originally from China. Based in martial arts, modern practice emphasizes health, longevity and mindful stress relief. Train the fundamental forms and exercises with Manak in a flowing, meditative environment. All levels are welcome. In times of uncertainty, the body remembers what the mind forgets. Ancient practices like Tai Chi and Qi Gong were developed not only for physical health, but to stabilize the nervous system, restore inner balance, and awaken a calm, resilient strength from within. This first class in a new ongoing series invites you into these time-tested arts as a form of embodied refuge and empowerment. City life keeps many of us in a constant low-grade stress loop—noise, screens, urgency, and crowds subtly training the nervous system to stay on edge. Tai Chi and Qi Gong offer a different orientation: practices that gently retrain the body to feel safe while awake and alert, not collapsed or checked out. Through slow, intentional movement and breath, these arts downshift the nervous system out of fight-or-flight, activate the parasympathetic “rest-and-digest” response, and support relief from chronic anxiety, agitation, and burnout. Rather than forcing relaxation, they cultivate steadiness from within. Unlike many modern workouts that build intensity without circulation, Tai Chi and Qi Gong restore flow without depletion. The practices support breath, oxygenation, lymphatic movement, and circulation—especially important for sedentary urban lives shaped by sitting, screens, and disconnection from gravity. Over time, they rebuild upright posture naturally, strengthen stabilizing muscles, improve balance, and refine proprioception—our felt sense of where we are in space. This is movement that nourishes rather than exhausts, building sustainable vitality and supporting longevity. At Astralab, we honor embodied ancestral knowledge—wisdom that survived not through books alone, but through living bodies. Tai Chi and Qi Gong reclaim the body as a site of intelligence, restoring trust, inner attunement, and nervous-system awareness. They offer mindfulness for people who need to move to feel safe, cultivating present-moment clarity without zoning out or striving. These practices dissolve false binaries—strength and softness, stillness and movement, discipline and ease—offering an antidote to hustle culture and a return to balance that is both ancient and deeply relevant now. LED BY: Manak Khamvongsa, who began studying Tai Chi in 2003 at Yuan Yen Do Martial Arts Center in Boston. Initially a supplement to his other martial arts, Tai Chi soon became his primary focus. In 2007 he started teaching martial arts, sharing the balance, form and beauty of Tai Chi with others. He saw all can benefit from this wonderful practice. Tai Chi also sparked interest in other internal arts and lead him to study Qigong and vitality massage. Manak is also a professional musician, playing the sitar and mastering sacred sounds for healing. You’ll be guided through the practice in a flowing, peaceful manner, with an emphasis on mindfulness, self-development, and moving meditation—accessible to beginners while nourishing for experienced practitioners. Come as you are. Leave steadier, clearer, and more rooted in your own inner strength.
