Please join us for the opening of THE OTHER SIDE OF FEAR IS FREEDOM on Friday, October 9th, 6-9pm as a part of the 25th annual Newark Arts Festival in the heart of Newark's Arts and Education District. On view: a 20+ year retrospective exhibition of images from Akintola Hanif exploring the complexity of Black culture and the hearts of the feared, neglected, and misunderstood. A collection of his short films will also be screened and copies of "The Black & White Book," HYCIDE's premiere coffee table book exploring the power of Black culture and race as a social construct, will be available for purchase. The event will also feature performances by soul collective June and The Pushas, singer/songwriter, Euphony, and alternative soul band, Roky's Reign. Sounds by Mav. Additionally, there will be FREE 5-minute massages by Probody Massage for the first 50 people who purchase a book. Refreshments by Sprouts Juice. Envisioned as a sanctuary for intentional creative exchange, reflection and collaboration, HYCIDE XPANSE is a curated third space for critical thinking and aligned minds. A testament to a life sharpened by love, loss, and clarity, XPANSE seeks to provide space for visual literacy and dialogue. After party from 9-11pm at HYCIDE XPANSE with performances by Cyph Two, Arrow the Symbol | MerikaRa and Khalil Jibran. Sounds by 400 proof THE OTHER SIDE OF FEAR IS FREEDOM will be on view by appointment only through April 23, 2027. Light refreshments served. Free and open to the public. RSVP REQUIRED.
