Therapy has gained in popularity, but finding a therapist that feels like the right fit can still be confusing. Join us (two Asian American Jewish therapists) as we explore the occasionally mysterious landscape of therapy. We’ll discuss mental health stigma, different therapy styles and finding your fit, resources for connecting with a therapist, and what to do once you’ve found a therapist you like. Come with questions and be ready to share and connect with others. This event marks the launch of LUNAR's Asian Jewish Mental Health Initiative, supported by the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles. About the Facilitators: Tyler Hakomori (he/him) grew up in the Los Angeles area with an Ashkenazi Jewish mother and Japanese father. He is currently a psychotherapist in private practice, where he has a particular focus on helping people struggling with self-criticism, shame, childhood trauma / C-PTSD, grief, and existential issues. He feels grateful every day to be able to accompany others through the inevitable messiness of being human. Adam Ashkenazi (he/him) grew up in Los Angeles with an LA-born Ashkenazi Jewish mother and an India-born Sephardic Jewish father. He was raised attending a modern orthodox Jewish day school, largely through an Ashkenaz lens with little connection to his Indian Jewish roots. He is currently a psychotherapist working at a recovery center with people navigating substance use. He also has a small private practice with people experiencing anxiety, shame, self-criticism, impacts of masculinity, and desires for increased connection and belonging. He feels lucky and inspired by the people he gets to sit with and learn from. Who’s invited? This event is open to Asian American Jews and their families. LUNAR defines ‘Asian American Jews’ as folks who identify as both Jewish (whether by heritage, religion or culture) and Asian American - this includes mixed race folks, transracial adoptees, Asian Jews by Choice, and more. We fully welcome those in the process of converting to Judaism, or simply exploring Judaism. About LUNAR: The LUNAR Collective is the first and only organization for Asian American Jews.
