“You can learn more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation” Welcome to Deep Fun: a “playshop” centered around exploring various types of collective effervescence, physical play, and wild jubilation! Last Deep Fun was a riot, so let's play again! ------- Deep Fun is a highly-physical facilitated communal play (no, not sex) session, drawing loosely on my years of experience as an actor, clown, physical performer, and educator. We'll be going on a hunt for our fun, exploring when we've reached the peak of our fun, and experiencing "collective effervescence", an experience of well-being and harmony when engaging in an activity with a shared purpose -- In this case, play in the form of collective exercises, "frivolous" activities, cooperative games, imaginative play, on-your-feet group problem solving, and much running (and perhaps rolling) around. We will explore playfulness as a conduit for community-building and relating authentically, and we will also be actively "researching" the feeling of physical pleasure, thrill, and wild abandon as a channel for deep self-inquiry. It's a healthy mix of play and reflection. Expect to take risks, be silly, get vulnerable, and sweat! The workshop follows a loose structure of four categories of play/game: Collective Play (playing together with the sole intention of having/exploring what's fun), Collective Competition (playing together with the intention of winning), Pair Play (exploring what's fun as we play in pairs), and Individual Play (exploring what's fun as you play on your own). Once we reach the peak of our fun as a collective, we move to a fresh, new game, keeping the workshop vital, uncomplicated, and responsive. It's a fast-paced, high energy, game-packed play session intended to invite vulnerability and connection through a heightened state of presence. With only two hours, we may not get to all of these categories. We will feel what it's like to share and sustain joy as a collective. We’ll revisit how fun it was to goof around with our friends at recess. We’ll shake up our adult egos and stories about play and research what is truly fun in our bodies. We’ll all probably look ridiculous, but at least we’ll be doing it together! Bring an open mind, plenty of water, and wear clothes to be active in! You will break a sweat! The workshop has benefitted from being intergenerational, so while it’s not a kid-centric space, young people 10+ are welcome. Photos and videos will be taken at the event, and an image consent form and waiver will be emailed to participants prior to the event. Logistics: Houghton Hall Arts Community, Joseph Jefferson Studio, Saturday, May 10th, 3-5pm, $20-40 sliding scale, Venmo or cash (Venmo preferred) ----- Let's put rubber to road and tour Deep Fun up the east coast this summer!
