Fashion's been doing this for 20 years. Tech, welcome to the chat. This is the direction tech is headed: AI writes the code, nobody maintains it, everyone rebuilds from scratch every six months. Custom tools nobody documented. Codebases that sprawl like a Shein cart. (Scott's take: https://worksonmymachine.ai/p/entering-technical-debts-zirp-era) This is what fashion has been doing for twenty years: make it cheap, make it fast, make it disposable, make it again. A closet full of things you don't remember buying and a trillion dollars in returns and waste. (Nancy's take: https://repairera.substack.com/p/earth-month-is-a-trap) The question is whether tech learns from fashion's mistake, or repeats it at a new scale. This Tech Week, we're hosting a happy hour of guided roundtables across tech, fashion, ops, & sustainability. Expert hosts leading conversations on different angles of the theme. Everyone has a chance to bring their perspective. Topics like what fast fashion does right, what tech can learn from fashion (and vice versa), infrastructure nobody sees, and what "buy it for life" means in 2026. Expect cross-industry collaboration, a few drinks, a few laughs, and maybe some insight on how to move forward. Tech bros, fashion girlies, investors looking for the moat, and sustainability folks who saw this coming. All are welcome. Co-hosted by Nancy Rhodes (Alternew, The Repair Era) and Scott Werner (Artificial Ruby, Sublayer). By registering, you'll be subscribed to Works on My Machine and The Repair Era. Consider it homework for the roundtable. This event is a part of #NYTechWeek—a week of events hosted by VCs and startups to bring together the tech ecosystem. Learn more at www.tech-week.com.
