WHAT IS OUR RELATIONSHIP TO WORK? For some of us, work is gratifying: we hone our craft, grow in excellence, create beautiful things, tend to that which has been longing for restoration. For others, it is a slog, a grind, a cruel list of 9s and 6s that engulf our days. (Perhaps one's reaction to the phrase "Happy Monday" is a kind of Rorschach test for this.) But for many of us, whether delightful or debilitating, work can feel inevitably dissatisfying, like we never fully arrive at the vision in our head; pursuing "success" can be an exercise in chasing ever-moving goalposts (to say nothing of the dreaded prophecies of "the future of work" by the endless feed of Experts™️). Why do we work? What is our relationship to work? In 1938, JRR Tolkien (yes, the guy with the rings) wrote a short story about our humanity, our work, and the tensions, limits, frustrations, hopes, & heartache we experience as earthbound creatures. Join us on February 12 as we explore the role of Work according to the Professor's short story: "Leaf by Niggle". We'll have an evening of lively discussion, libations, debate, and readings aloud as continue our salon series: How to Survive the Coming AI Utopocalypse[0]. This event is *free* for Tillage members, $35 for non-members. Note! This story is a tad longer than those we’ve covered in our previous salons, so we’ll send a copy to registrants via email to be read before the event.
