The opening reception for a show of new artwork by Donny Bianchi, Isa Dorvillier, Andy Marlowe, and Nicolina Morra. Expect paintings, quilts, sculptures, video, and much reverie. After party immediately following. ----- PRESS RELEASE alluvium - from alluere: “to wash against” a deposit of sediment formed by flowing water Considered through the lens of flowing water, spiritual transformation, and environmental preservation, the works in To Wash Against engage with the ways in which we are shaped by forces much greater than ourselves. The divine is revealed at a critical moment to change our perception of the world: the moon moves across the sky, an image appears in an archive, flood waters rise onto the street, an apparition arrives. Works include Bianchi’s multiple super 8 film loops tracking the movement of the natural world through lapses in time, obfuscated raindrops, streaking embers, and natural creek foam - made in situ in a marsh in upstate New York. Dorvillier’s quilts which combine archival images of New York City’s coastline to reshape narratives of the urban environment, and soft sculpture replicas of gas storage tanks printed with images of the banks of the Newtown Creek which they occupy. Marlowe’s precise black and white paintings, rendered on board shaped after medieval altarpieces coalesce disparate imagery of human artifacts, trees felled by cosmic explosion, and singer Marianne Faithful. Morra’s ethereal large scale paintings reflect on apparitions of the divine and the false promises of childhood.
