Repeat After Her brings together Ke Zhang’s Massage Baby! and a new live performance developed in response to the film. Rooted in Zhang’s encounters with Chinese women working in massage, the program considers how personal stories are reorganized through memory, translation, performance, and the camera—and how the speaking body moves between being recorded, watched, and self-presented. The live performance rearranges fragments of dialogue and carries them from the screen into physical space. Together, the works examine the distance between what is spoken, what is understood, and what ultimately reaches an audience.
