Suggested attire: Athletic clothes free of buckles, snaps, or large zippers. Long sleeve spandex rashguard top and leggings are most comfortable for reducing friction on the mats. Please remove as much jewelry as possible and trim your nails short as a courtesy to your training partners to reduce the risk of cuts and scratches.

Accessibility: Please email at contact@sweetatx.org to make arrangements for accessibility accommodations. Participants will have the option to practice while remaining seated for the duration of class. We will meet on a padded floor in a ground-level training space.

Instructor: Lu Villarreal (he/they) is queer, trans, PoC multi-disciplinary martial artist and personal trainer with 15 years of experience. Lu also works as a confidential advocate for survivors of sexual assault, helping folks navigate their options for interacting with medical, legal, and criminal justice systems following a violent sexual encounter. Lu coaches using body-affirming and gender-neutral language.

Session Description Join Coach Lu ATX for Defense on your Back, a beginner-friendly self defense workshop, brought to you by Sex Workers Educating & Empowering Texans (SWEET) and Witty Bimbo. Using techniques from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA, participants will train options for exerting control over someone who is between their legs in a judgement-free environment. Practice with your peers and learn how to manage distance, time, and balance during a combative encounter with the goal of reducing injury and escaping. This is a FREE class in Austin TX for sex workers only.
