Hard to pronounce. Easy to eat. Mekitsi are Bulgarian fried dough, served hot and very difficult to stop at one. Have yours with homemade seasonal jam, powdered sugar, Bulgarian white cheese, or lyutenitsa & white cheese. For one Saturday, Nabo becomes a little bit Bulgarian. Stay for a mekitsa, take one for a walk or bring a few home. The only rule? Eat them hot. Wash it down with homemade ayran or fig leaf soda. I’m Tanya - Bulgarian by birth, Copenhagener for the past five years. I left my job this summer with a vague idea of making something of my own. Mekitsi felt like a good place to start. Somewhere in my suitcase between Bulgaria and Copenhagen, a tiny deli appeared - herbs, teas and a few other things from home to take home. The wine comes from Georgiev & Milkov, made from indigenous Bulgarian grape varieties and brought to Copenhagen by Kork Vinhandel. Pick a bottle to take with you and enjoy the rest of your Saturday. Come hungry. Taste Bulgaria through my eyes. Take a piece of it home. Fried dough diplomacy.
