How To Heal The Planet is a short documentary following Jeffrey Orkin, a Mississippi native and urban farmer who founded the cutting-edge hydroponic lettuce company Greener Roots Farm in Nashville, Tennessee. The film traces Jeffrey’s farm-to-table journey while exploring the chefs and food pioneers who helped build Nashville’s independent restaurant ecosystem. In the 1990s, the city’s dining scene was dominated by corporate steakhouses and hibachi grills sourcing ingredients from faraway wholesalers.
Featured in the film are Margot McCormack (Margot Café & Bar), Jeremy Barlow (Tayst), Tyler Brown (Capitol Grille), and John Dyke (Turnip Truck)—leaders who helped cultivate Nashville’s thriving local food community rooted in relationships with farmers. Also featured is Amanda Little, author of "The Fate of Food" and a Vanderbilt professor, who explores how innovation in farming, like hydroponics, can help sustain future food systems.
