It’s gonna be Year of the Horse soon and Caiwei is bringing back her annual decadent banquet, but this time with an upgrade. It would be the first time that she hosts this outside of her home so people will actually have space to eat, socialize, move around, and do all sorts of fun activities.
Caiwei, Yanki and Yufeng have been Chinese before it was cool and now welcome you to celebrate the (arguably) most Chinese day in a year in the most Chinese way we can think of— which means good food, community, karaoke, mahjong, fireworks.. all the good stuff and more!
Since Caiwei moved to NYC in 2021, she has been holding a Chinese new year eve dinner party. What started as a closed door celebration between friend slowly became a big banquet where we can be creative and intentional about making a new home. In what feels like an increasingly hostile world we intend to honor this tradition and making space for more friends to join us,, we believe Chinese New Year is for everyone <3
Like the past two years, we will have 9-10 dishes, with highlights including Caiwei’s native Hubei’s special fish cake, beef stew, steamed ribs with crushed rice, along with bean curd in vegan Shacha sauce. Yanki will bring back crowd favorite stir-fry string beans along with a colorful, all-Chinese salad. Yufeng will present smoked braised chicken, which he insisted we add to the menu for Dongbei representation. Classics like vegetable spring roles, steamed sausages and dumplings will also be served. All the dishes will be home cooked, and served on hot plates in a buffet style. There will be at least 3 vegan dishes and 4 vegetarian dishes. Please let us know if you have other food restrictions and we will try our best to accommodate you. (There will be a horse themed vegan dessert!)
We provide a karaoke station, a mahjong table, and some surprise art drops from the community. There is an outdoor space at the venue, so we will have a small amount of fireworks as it gets close to 12am.
Because of the large amount of food we are cooking and work we put in, we ask for everyone to chip in ($24 food ingredients + $6 venue contribution) per person. Note that this is merely to cover the costs and calculated with zero profit in mind. However, if you want to support us, considering getting one or more of our recipe cards at the venue! They will be on sale and you will walk home with a little zine featuring Yanki’s illustration, the recipe, and Caiwei’s writing.
We will provide some basic soda and beer, but encourage you to bring your own beverage, especially alcoholic drinks. We kindly ask you to refrain from bringing dishes or snacks as this is a curated food experience.
Dress code is something red. Extra credit if you manage to incorporate horse elements into your outfit. See you soon!
We are thankful for the generous support of Telos Haus. Poster design by Yanki Kung.
