**All levels of Yiddish speakers and singers are welcome, but be prepared to speak only in Yiddish!**
Farbreng:DC is a Yiddish-language immersion program where we gather together informally to speak in Yiddish. For most of our community members, if we want a Yiddish-speaking environment, we have to proactively create one—so that’s what we’re doing! Here are some guidelines for being part of a language-immersion activity.
Asking how to say something? Perfectly fine; we do this all the time. Tossing in a short English word or phrase—especially an idiom or quote—while keeping the conversation in Yiddish? Common among American Yiddish speakers and also perfectly fine. However, we ask participants to avoid telling anecdotes or otherwise speaking in English for an extended period of time. Conversing in English disrupts the Yiddish-language environment, and it takes away learning opportunities for students. Yiddish speakers and students at all levels are welcome at farbreng. It's normal to feel nervous about your Yiddish, but we applaud and encourage all students and speakers to use Yiddish. If you have any questions about the program, please write to us at farbreng-dc@yugntruf.org
