4/5 | First Sunday: Dim Sum + Mahjong

Sun, Apr 5 1:45pm · Brooklyn
Growing up in LA, dim sum followed by mahjong was a weekly ritual. A group of five families would gather for dim sum lunch before caravanning to one of our homes for hours of mahjong that stretched into the wee hours of the morning. Inspired by this tradition of ritual and gathering, we're continuing the "First Sundays" series at Nin Hao, now with an all-you-can-eat dim sum buffet format that made its debut at our Lunar New Year celebration and was such a hit. Come join us for an afternoon to learn Hong Kong-style mahjong and connect with neighbors over dim sum and tea. *Note: This month falls on Easter Sunday, April 5th, just a heads up in case you have holiday plans to work around!* What to Expect: 1:45PM to 3:30PM: Learning fundamentals and instruction over dim sum 3:30PM to 4:15PM: Practice play to apply what you've learned Just as I learned this game as a way to hold onto community and tradition, this workshop offers more than just rules and strategy. It's an invitation to embrace the ritual of gathering, playing, and being together. No prior knowledge needed, our workshop is designed for beginners, though experienced players are welcome to join and refresh their skills. 🀄 Guided instruction on Hong Kong style mahjong fundamentals 🀄 Take-home cheat sheet to reference for future games 🀄 Hands-on practice in a supportive environment 🀄 All-you-can-eat dim sum buffet featuring a rotating selection of Nin Hao's classics, including vegetarian-friendly options 🀄 A pot of premium loose leaf Chinese tea to enjoy while you play About Your Instructor: Veronica Chan is the founder of Vermilion Mahjong Club, where she hosts intimate workshops and monthly gatherings to foster connection and community around the mahjong table. She brings a warm, accessible approach to teaching this traditional game, making it approachable for newcomers while honoring its rich cultural heritage. Payment: Your $35 ticket holds your spot and covers instruction. You'll pay $35 at the door for the all-you-can-eat dim sum buffet and tea. Total: $70 Cancellation Policy: Tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. Be sure to check your calendar before booking. If you're unable to attend, you may transfer your ticket to a friend. Seating: Groups of four will sit and play together. The buffet is self-service so you can eat at your own pace throughout the session. Different Mahjong Styles: We will be learning and playing Hong Kong-style (the most popular Chinese mahjong style), not American-style. 3 clues to identify which style is which: American: Sets include Joker tiles Chinese (including Hong Kong): Sets do not include Joker tiles American: Eligible winning hands change annually Chinese (including Hong Kong): Rules and eligible winning hands do not change annually American: Sometimes spelled Mahjongg, with two g's Chinese: Most often spelled Mahjong, with just one g
