❛o❛UnionDocs is headed outside for May and June to take advantage of one of our favorite city offerings: the ready-made cinemas of the handball courts in our public parks. It’s a long-standing UNDO tradition to project bold visions, reflections, and possibilities onto the walls of the city’s handball courts, transforming them into open-air theaters. This summer, we’re thrilled to continue that tradition with a slate of programs that are free and open to all.
This May, we’re honored to join hands with the Lyons Community School to screen Los Sures, a film that holds a truly special place in our hearts. Over a decade ago, we had the privilege of restoring this iconic documentary, and from there, it became a key starting point for our Living Los Sures project. The film, directed by Diego Echeverría in 1983, offers a powerful look at South Williamsburg during a time of transformation, capturing the everyday lives of residents as they navigate the challenges of poverty, racial tensions, and change, all while celebrating the culture and resilience that define the area. With the former UnionDocs HQ being located in Los Sures for 18 years before our move to Ridgewood, it’s a neighborhood that has been central to our story, and Los Sures has been a touchstone for our work ever since.
We’ll be kicking things off with a special barbecue hosted by the school—so come early, grab a bite, and hang out before the film begins! Join us under the stars as we revisit this important piece of history and reflect on how the neighborhood has evolved. Whether you’ve lived in Los Sures yourself, are a longtime Brooklyn resident or someone curious about the area’s story, we invite you to come experience this film in community!
This event is free and open to all, inviting the UNDO community, our neighbors, passersby, film lovers, and anyone curious to join for a festive evening under the stars!
Barbecue starts at 5:30, and the film starts at dusk, come through!
