Set sail with Beyond Walls for a hands-on day of creativity, problem-solving, and outdoor exploration at the creek!
Hosted by Learning Lead: Kim
Using a variety of building materials and natural treasures gathered from the environment, kids will design, build, test, and redesign their very own boats. Will your boat carry the most cargo? Travel the farthest? Stay afloat the longest? There's only one way to find out!
Along the way, everyone will explore basic engineering concepts such as buoyancy, balance, design, and adaptation through open-ended play and experimentation.
Each child will also receive a Voyage Journal Unit Study to document their adventure:
⚓ Sketch their boat design
⚓ Record materials used
⚓ Make predictions before testing
⚓ Track results and redesign ideas
⚓ Reflect on what they learned as an engineer
This activity is designed for all ages and encourages creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and a love of learning outdoors.
RAIN OR SHINE. Light drizzle (no lightning of course) we’ll still build our boats under the pavillion)
Heavy storms/ lightning we will move boat building indoors
Bring clothes that can get wet, and a spirit of adventure. If you’re feeling extra creative, bringing some of your own materials to use that you think will help your boat float !
Families are welcome to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy by the water after our boat trials.
