Join designer Jess Lewis on Saturday March 14 for an afternoon full of curiosity and experimentation as we learn about Corita Kent, an ex-nun activist pop artist, then try one of her techniques on for size.
We’ll learn about her life, work, and philosophy, then create our own viewfinders. We’ll experiment with shape and color to see how that affects the world we see on the other side. After we’ve created some windows to see the world through, we’ll explore the joyful nooks and crannies of Heck House, a zany haven for the arts nestled in East Atlanta.
This workshop is designed to encourage more people to embrace their creativity the world’s real weird right now, and making art is a good way to move it on through. No experience needed.
“I want a lil more”:
Corita Kent (1918-1986) is an arts educator, activist, and pop artist known for her experimentations with type and perspective. By skewing, reframing, and layering everyday sayings and objects, she demanded social change. As an avid lifetime arts educator and artist deeply involved in the pop art movement, she challenged herself and her students to engage with the world differently. One of her foundational techniques are viewfinder walks. Windows are cut in thick paper and looked through, recontextualizing the world on the other side.
Accessibility
All spaces, indoor and outdoor, and accessible by wheelchair. Weather permitting, we will be in the pavilion, an outdoor space.
