Cordyceps Field Research Expedition – 2 Day Immersive Mycology Experience Join mycologist William Padilla-Brown for a rare hands-on expedition focused on one of the most fascinating fungal groups on Earth: Cordyceps. This two-day immersive experience combines field foraging, laboratory techniques, and real fungal research. Participants will explore Cordyceps habitat in the mountains, learn how to identify parasitic fungi in the wild, and bring specimens back to the cabin where we will practice cloning, spore collection, and DNA sequencing techniques used by modern mycologists. Cordyceps are some of the most unique organisms in the fungal kingdom, forming intricate relationships with insects and playing important ecological roles in forest ecosystems. During this expedition you’ll gain direct experience with the tools and methods scientists use to study them. What We’ll Do Field Exploration Search for wild Cordyceps and other entomopathogenic fungi while learning how to recognize host insects, habitat patterns, and seasonal emergence. Clone Wild Specimens Participants will learn how to take tissue cultures from wild Cordyceps and establish them on agar. Spore Collection & Microscopy Observe spores and learn techniques used to collect and preserve fungal genetics. DNA Sequencing Introduction Learn how fungal DNA is prepared and sequenced to confirm species identity and discover new diversity. Ecology & Evolution Discussion We’ll explore the ecological role of parasitic fungi and discuss what Cordyceps can teach us about evolution, host relationships, and fungal diversity. Food & Lodging Included Participants will stay together in a rustic cabin setting, creating space for deeper discussion, shared meals, and evening mycology sessions. Breakfast and lunch are included both days. Dinner is included on Saturday night Who This Is For This expedition is perfect for: • Mushroom hunters ready to deepen their knowledge • Cultivators interested in wild genetics • Students of mycology and fungal ecology • Anyone fascinated by the strange world of parasitic fungi No lab experience is required—just curiosity and a willingness to explore. Group Size This is a small group expedition to allow everyone hands-on access to the techniques and equipment. Location Southern PA Appalachian region near Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania. More details, packing list, and schedule will be sent to participants after registration. Come spend two days exploring forests, discovering parasitic fungi, and learning the science behind one of nature’s most mysterious organisms.
