January Book Club
We’re opening 2026 with our first Outlandish Book Club of the year, and we’re excited to share some love with our neighbors @cafeconlibros_bk , an independent Black-owned bookstore in Brooklyn that’s long been a space for community, conversation, and care.
Outlandish is a Brooklyn-based, Black-owned outdoor and community space rooted in storytelling, movement, and gathering with intention. Our book club is one way we make space for people of color to slow down, read deeply, and connect through shared reflection.
Our first read of the year is Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward, a searing, intimate memoir named a Best Book of the Century by @nytbooks and @nymag. Through the loss of five young Black men she loved, Ward explores grief, memory, and what it means to love a place that has also caused harm. Set in rural Mississippi, the book is deeply tied to land and lineage—where beauty and brutality coexist.
