Matilija Collective and Common Ground are bringing together mahjong and community in one space to celebrate the Year of the Fire Horse. We recommend a donation of $20, which covers open play as well as light snacks and refreshments. Founded by lifelong San Gabriel Valley residents, Amy J. Wong and Andrew Fung Yip opened the doors of this inclusive space back in 2022. During the 2025 Eaton Fire, Matilija stepped up as a community hub, subsequently receiving grant funding and transitioning into Matilija Collective. Their name comes from the Matilija poppy, a flower known as a "fire follower" that uses smoke to germinate and flourish. When grown on a hillside, the Matilija poppy binds the soil together and prevents erosion - Matilija Collective embodies this spirit through bringing communities of color together with the goal of building multiracial solidarity.
