Come dressed modestly and comfortably - think kurta + leggings, a salwar, or anything you can move freely in with coverage. If you’re going western, opt for fitted pants and a top that covers your shoulders and midriff. We ask that you skip the shorts, sweatpants, sports bra-only, and tank tops looks - as a classical art form, the dress code is part of honoring that space. When in doubt: if you’d wear it to a cultural class or a temple, you’re good. 🙏
Please note that your RSVP is not saved until you’ve reserved your spot via Venmo ($25): @wevibinshankhri ———— stomp. gesture. tell a story. 🪔 Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest dance forms on earth - born in the temples of Tamil Nadu, built on rhythm, sculpture, and pure feeling. This 90-minute workshop is for everyone: the person who grew up in bharatanatyam class and misses it, the curious soul who’s always wanted to try, and the dancer who lives for learning something new. No experience needed. Just show up. Here’s what we’re getting into: 🥁 the rhythm — you’ll learn to feel a tala (rhythmic cycle) in your body and use your feet like a drum 🤲 the gestures — mudras (hand gestures) that carry entire meanings: a lotus blooming, a bee arriving, an offering 👁️ the expression — how your eyes, brows, and breath completely change what a movement says 💃 a short choreography — you’ll leave with actual steps you learned and a sequence you put together We’ll warm up, move through yoga conditioning designed specifically for this style, break down foundational footwork (adavus), and close with the same bow we opened with — namaskaram — but this time you’ll actually know what it means. This is a space to feel the art form, not perform it perfectly. Come ready to sweat a little, laugh a little, and leave with a totally different relationship to movement. 📍 All levels welcome This workshop is led by professional dancers from Vidhya Darpanam Dance Company: Ananya Delaney, Shalini Thoniyil, Megha Nair, Sandhya Shankar, Anjali Bordoloi and Shankhri Balaji.
