📝 This event is free and open to the public but with a purchase of $30 you will receive a LIMITED EDITION SoundWalk Journal and MAP with interactive exercises to guide you through the walk. Printed by Outlandish Press. Map and Journal design by Sophia Kaplan. The Ridgewood-Glendale SoundWalk is a participatory musical exploration of Queens neighborhoods. Participants will embark on a guided walk, starting at the Stone Circle Theatre and meander through local businesses and pathways leading to Green Space, ultimately culminating in a performance and picnic potluck at Highland Park's Ridgewood Reservoir. Along the way, attendees will engage in interactive journaling exercises, identifying the unique "Sound Marks" of each location and contributing to the creation of a participatory musical composition inspired by the neighborhood's diverse sonic landscape. This project not only celebrates the richness of the community's cultural tapestry but also sheds light on areas requiring improvement, such as disability accessibility and pedestrian safety infrastructure. Music Composed by Concetta Abbate Performed by Concetta Abbate Judette Elliston Jimmy Kraft Damon Hankoff Concetta Abbate is a NYC-based violinist, vocalist, composer, music educator, death doula and disability advocate. Her genre-crossing music explores how people navigate their environments and experiences, while centering empathy and difference. By cultivating immersive experiences that pose poignant philosophical questions, she encourages audiences to challenge their routine conceptions and expand their senses. Abbate says, “I was born with a disability, a visual impairment, which has always caused me to engage with the world through sound. It's exciting to see audiences use their sense of hearing in a new way, deepening their experience of their surroundings. I am passionate about using my art to highlight divergent perspectives of how folks navigate our public spaces. I’d like to guide the audience through this experience rather than simply telling them about it. In my experience this approach inspires further conversation and actions around appreciating the perception of partial-sighted people.” Abbate has released four full length studio albums of her original music, and her work has brought her to performance spaces as diverse as Carnegie Hall and the catacombs of Greenwood Cemetery. Abbate holds an MA from Columbia University Teachers College and for ten years ran her own music school. Most recently, she founded Sound and Memory, a music and memorial arts organization that offers end of life planning, music for memorial services and celebrations of life, original compositions to memorialize loved ones, and grief education for the public. Her work has been supported by New Music USA, The Rauschenberg Foundation and NYFA among many others. The Ridgewood-Glendale SoundWalk is made possible (in part) with public funds from the Queens Arts Fund, a re-grant program supported by New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by New York Foundation for the Arts. We’d also like to thank our local business partners Myrtle BID, Stone Circle Theatre, Gotham Thrift Shop, Topos Book Store, Machpelah Cemetery, Ridgewood Rides, The Houdini Museum and NYC Parks.
