Celebrating 100 years of Black History Month: Our History, Our Presence, Our Future If you are a member of the African Diaspora and the LGBTQIA Community, we invite you to gather with us. Oral History is a powerful and ancestral practice among those in the African diaspora that has been utilized for generations. Those who were enslaved used spoken word, song, dance, and proverbs to enlighten, encourage, and ensure our history was never lost, even in the midst of forced assimilation. As a wider queer community, we have also faced erasure in the midst of having to conform to a hostile society in order to feel safe. As black queer folx, that pressure to conform and assimilate is multiplied, nonetheless we have endured, and there would be no American queer rights or justice without the life, legacies, and sacrifice of black queer people and our elders. Come to storytell and engage in the African tradition of Oral Histories. Tell a story of your black queer journey. Tell the story of a queer family member(even a suspected one). Tell the story of a queer elder or community member. Come ready to listen and/or come ready to share a story, divine wisdom, a poem, or even sing a song.
