"Interventions on Memory & Musical Ephemera" is a series of stand-alone workshops inspired by Nada's discovery of her mother's cassette tapes collection, found in a large trash bag in the attic. She had just managed to save them from being thrown out during a major exodus of stored items from the family home. Her family couldn't understand why she would want to preserve them, when all the music there has been digitized and can be found online for free. However, Nada believes that objects carry meaning, memory, and power, and wanted to get to know the tapes more intimately. After cleaning, organizing, and scanning the cassette tapes, and following an interview with her mother about them, Nada designed this workshop to invite participants to participate in memory work, writing, collage, and zine making to explore their relationship with music and memory. Participants of the workshop will individually create their own zines that will fold into cassette cases. In the workshop, participants will learn to use writing and different collage tools, and work with their own family archives. These tools will come together to create their zine. Guided prompts and visualization (and a little bit of pre-workshop homework) will prepare participants to explore their own relationship with music ephemera, family history and communication, and memory-making & preserving. Completed zines will be scanned by Nada to create a cassette zine library.
