🇵🇭✨ Philippine-American Heritage in D.C. Tour with Prof. Tiongson! 📅 Saturday, Oct 11 | 10 AM - 11:30 AM 📍 Meet in front of the Walsh Building (1221 36th Street NW). In honor of Filipino American History Month (FAHM), Professor Erwin R. Tiongson of Georgetown University will lead a walking tour based on his book, Philippine-American Heritage in Washington, D.C. (History Press, 2023), and more recent research. His work, which began as a family project in 2012, traces the intertwined histories of the Philippines and the United States along the streets of Washington, from the end of the Spanish American War in 1898 through the US recognition of Philippine independence in 1946, and the many years since. West Potomac Park was inspired by Manila's Luneta, and District streets are named after pivotal Philippine battle grounds. These landmarks are often unmentioned in guidebooks and reflect the complicated relationship between the U.S. and Philippines—the narratives of colonialism, the negotiated and renegotiated ties between two nations, and the stories of fascinating individuals who lived through this turbulent century. 📍This tour will visit 8-10 sites on the Hilltop Campus of Georgetown University and its immediate neighborhood, starting in front of the Walsh Building (1221 36th Street NW). 🍽️ After the tour, join us for an impromptu lunch hang in the area — perfect for connecting and reflecting with new friends. 👟 Bring comfy shoes + curiosity. ⚠️ Spots are limited!
