The smArt Collective is proud to present “Balanta Born” a solo exhibition of sculptures that reimagine the cultural remnants of the African Diaspora by San Francisco-based artist Zulu Heru. The show runs from March 30 - May 1, 2026, with an artist reception on Thursday, April 2 from 6-9pm.
"Balanta Born is a celebration of discovery. Of lineage, identity, and artistic evolution. Rooted in my ancestry from the Balanta tribe of Guinea-Bissau, this exhibition presents three evolutions of my sculptural practice—from early explorations to a more refined and defined signature style. As I’ve learned more about who I am, my work has transformed with me.
This year, I’m preparing to travel to Africa for the first time to visit my ancestral homeland, the proceeds from this exhibition will directly support that journey—bringing the exploration full circle."
Experience this exhibition where art, culture, and community come together to celebrate the journey of becoming.
