RECLAIM Dance with DJ Charles Hawthorne 📅 Sunday, April 12 |🕑 1:45 – 5:30 PM | 📍 Bandaloop Studios, Oakland RECLAIM is a daytime dance party for people who are BIPOC, Queer, or both! Charles Hawthorne (they/them) is a Black queer DJ, event producer, and community builder based in Oakland, CA. Through their music and community work, they strive to create spaces where queer and trans people can gather to move their bodies and cultivate joy. Charles is the creator of Five Finger Disco and they serve as the Board President of Oaklash. Charles weaves a blend of disco, house, global club, and RnB to create a unique dancefloor experience rooted in connection, presence, and movement. Their style brings striking percussive elements, lush instrumentation, and legendary vocals to pull people out of their heads and onto the dance floor. Heavily influenced by the style of the early disco and house DJs, Charles moves beyond genres to builds a shared groove that facilitates a journey through the history and movement of Black queer dance music. Charles believes you can’t trust a DJ who doesn’t dance, the proof is in the pudding, honey! At RECLAIM, the music takes you on a journey of expression and connection. We start slow, giving you time to warm up your body and settle into the space. As the rhythm builds, the energy rises, and you'll feel your blood pumping as genres shift, and new movements emerge. We end slow again, so we can settle our bodies and soak in all that we created together. This is a dance party— and--it’s a remembering of joy, of resistance, of being alive together. A place for BIPOC and/or QUEER communities to come together in bliss and depth.
