Interested in starting your own beehive, or just want to learn more about honey bees? Then come along with beekeeper Oscar Villa and explore the basics of beekeeping. (Esta clase es accesible para hispanohablantes.  This class is accessible to Spanish speakers. ) You will learn how to start beehives in your own backyard here in Chicago, including information on start-up costs. You’ll learn about honeybee biology, the importance of pollinators to climate, beekeeping equipment and protective gear, and how to keep your bees safe, healthy, and thriving.  Because pollinators are what keeps our world in balance, this course is for everyone, regardless of whether you want to start a beehive of your own. But we hope you will leave the day empowered to start your own journey, and with all the information you need to get started.  At the end of this workshop, you will be able to: -Recognize the four stages of honeybee lifecycle and know what they do -Describe the honeybee colony lifecycle and its goals through the year -Consider different types of bees when choosing queens for their hives -Identify and acquire equipment needs for beekeeping -Recognize a good spot to place a bee yardPurchase bees and properly install packages or a nucleus (“nuc” for short) -Evaluate maintenance needs required for beekeeping and recognize when to perform those tasksInspect your bees and harvest honey -Recognize and manage the pests common to beehives -Understand Chicago regulations on backyard beekeeping Carpools are available, just email us at azadimedics@gmail.com. This event is on a sliding scale, $45-100. While this sliding scale is higher than our usual classes due to materials, labor, and gas cost, we have a small amount of scholarships available (BIPOC and South/West Side residents prioritized), email us at azadimedics@gmail.com for the application.  It is a long day so we will have both veg and non—veg lunch options, but please feel free to bring whatever snacks and water you want. We will provide protection gear, but ask that everyone wear long pants and shirts, as well as bring their own hat or baseball cap (we will have extras in case you forget!) Please do not attend if you have a bee allergy of any kind, but we will have an EpiPen on hand for an emergency and a trained medic. This class is adults (16+ years old) only for now, although we can explore a youth class if there is interest!
