Join designer Jess Lewis on Monday May 18 at 6:30pm for an evening full of experimentation as we learn about Sam Granger, an outsider artist best known for “SamG Land” who makes graphic signs in vast outdoor installations, then try one of his techniques on for size.
We’ll learn about his life and the Outsider Arts movement, then create our own signs. We’ll experiment with what signs are used for and how to make them effective, including: object use, wording, color, placement, and more. After we’ve created some signs and played with placement, we’ll explore the joyful nooks and crannies of Heck House, a zany haven for the arts nestled in East Atlanta. There are even a few Sam G originals on display!
This workshop is designed to encourage more people to embrace their creativity. The world’s real weird right now, and making art is a good way to move it on through. No experience needed.

About the facilitator
Jess Lewis (they/them, quarefutures.com), is a trans nonbinary artist, writer, and designer who hails from the hollers of Western North Carolina. They strongly believe that whether it be spreadsheets or painting, our creativity is key to connecting with our humanity, and that no one should feel severed from it. They live in Atlanta, where they explore futures of liberation and how to get there. They’ve facilitated well over 250 workshops, from design thinking to subversive cross stitch to utopia building.
