*3/23 update for parents (and anyone who wants to hang with the kids : )*
babysitting + byo toy signup: bit.ly/4iAxbGG
Our current plan is to have at least 3 babysitters (all friends and family) and 2 parents rotating in at all times, which will ensure a < 3:1 ratio of kids:minders at all times.
This means each parent needs to cover one half-hour shift in the morning, and one in the afternoon. If you're bringing +1's, you can share the shifts. And needless to say, if anyone (including non-parents) wants to sign up for more shifts than is necessary, please feel free.
On the day of the event, we'll set aside time for everyone to meet each others' kids and talk in a little more detail about handoffs and other policies.
Naps
We’ll provide a separate sleeping space, mats + sofas, white noise machines but expect that parents will bring their own sheets and put their kids to sleep.
*****************
As developers and parents of young children, we share the conviction that parenting is a site for creativity and invention just as much as software development. So, we’ve been thinking: why not combine the two, and use our parenting struggles and gripes as inspiration to generate new tools for parents and young children?
More concretely, we’ve been inspired by our recent experiences hacking together, first on a video calling app for our kids. We had meant it as a fun hack, but were surprised that Luka now uses it regularly. Motivated by this experience and the sheer desperation of running out of bedtime stories, Irena also recently built a bedtime story generator for Luka, now a fixture of their nighttime routine.
Of course, the reality is that all parents would love to have more time to reflect intentionally on their parenting, but we are often constrained by lack of free time, childcare, and community necessary to bring more ambitious projects into fruition. This is why an important aspect of this hackathon is that we’ll provide free childcare on-site and have a big group playdate at lunchtime.
Note that this hackathon is open to non-parents too! If you don't have kids in your life or project ideas, we'll have a brainstorming / gripe session at the start of the hackathon!
