Welcome back to lecture night at Blunt Sluts!
This lecture overviews the following core topics:
Traces the thousands of years of traditional and sacramental use of plants and fungi across global cultures, leading up to modern scientific categorization coined by Humphry Osmond as "mind-manifesting" compounds.
Distinguishes between classic psychedelics (such as tryptamines like psilocybin and DMT, and ergolines like LSD) and phenethylamines (like MDMA and mescaline), focusing on their interaction with brain serotonin 5-HT2A receptors.
Examines how these substances decrease default mode network activity, facilitate temporary regional brain communication, and promote neuroplasticity (acting as "psychoplastogens").
Addresses physiological safety profiles, psychological risks (such as challenging experiences or "bad trips"), and the foundational importance of "set and setting".
Overview:
For thousands of years, mammals (including humans) have participated in psychedelic experiences. Whether it was for ritualistic purposes or to connect spiritually, these plants and natural substances have co-mingled with the creatures of the earth. In this course, we will take it back to the dawn of time– when early homo sapiens were said to discover the sacred usage of psychedelics. We will view short clips of psychedelic documentaries, overview a scientific article and even participate in some group discussion. Some of you may have already had experiences with psychedelics like psilocybin (magic mushrooms), LSD, or even opium – in this lecture you’ll be able to share some of those experiences. We will discuss the premise of ephemerality within the psychedelic space and even where some scientific studies are taking modern medicine.
