🥁✨This summer, we’re opening space for you to connect with the living tradition of Plena — through movement, story, and sound.
Join us for a special one-day immersive 6-hour Plena mini retreat experience at El Barrio’s Artspace PS109 — a deeper journey into the history, spirit, and practice of this cultural art form. Together we’ll learn, reflect, create, share a meal, and move in rhythm as community.
What you’ll be gaining:
• Introduction to the history and cultural roots of Puerto Rican plena
• Understanding plena as a tool for storytelling, resistance, and community connection
• The 6 core elements of plena tradition and performance
• Hands-on pandero and güicharo workshop
• Introduction to plena dance and movement
• Call-and-response singing and vocal expression in plena
• Plena song structure and lyrical composition
• Collective songwriting session: composing our own plena together
• Improvisation, creativity, and community participation
• Interactive community jam session with all participants
• Open space for cultural exchange, questions, and dialogue
• No experience necessary — all ages and levels welcome - under 17 must be accompanied with an adult.
Let us align with the spirit — honoring heritage not just through celebration, but through practice, learning, and passing it forward.

Limited Edition: We are offering a small amount of güiros made from an artisan from La Isla and will be available day of for $40.
