Hi! I'm Nick Mann, and I talk about edible plants. Join me for a 2.5-hour hike where we'll identify, forage, and taste delicious and healthy weeds, harvesting from the wild abundance that grows across our urban Los Angeles landscape. I'll also point out any toxic lookalikes that we come across. This hike will mostly focus on edible nonnative plants, but there are sections where we will come across a lot of native species as well!
I often get asked about plant ID apps, and I actually want to encourage their use on this walk. While they're often incorrect, and you should never eat anything that you can't 100% identify, plant ID apps can be valuable tools in a balanced outdoor education.
Who am I: If you've seen my videos on YouTube and TikTok, then you know I love talking about edible plants! I'll talk about edible weeds, edible landscaping, edible trees.
When: Saturday, February 28, 2026 from 9:30AM to 12 noon. Please be on time for this one. The hike takes an hour 15 minutes without stops, and there's so much to stop and talk about along the way!
Where: The exact meeting point will be provided after RSVP, but we'll be hiking the Betty B. Dearing Trail, starting and ending at the Fryman Hiking Trail Parking Lot. It's a roughly 3-mile loop with about 500 feet of elevation gain up through TreePeople and back down again. The map pin is NOT accurate. I will reach out before the event to provide directions to the exact meeting point!
Cost: $30/person via, Venmo, PayPal, etc. Cash in person is also OK. If money is an inhibitor to joining, please reach out, and we'll figure something out!
FAQ:
Are kids allowed?
All ages who are interested in learning about edible weeds and who can do the hike are welcome!
Are pets allowed?
Yes, dogs are allowed on leash.
Is this hike accessible?
Unfortunately, not really. I've seen strollers and wagons on the trail, but I wouldn't recommend this one for wheels. I also host Plant ID Park Walks that are more accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
What do I wear/bring?
The trail has been pretty dry, sometimes dusty. Wear comfortable hiking shoes/boots that can get dirty. Bring at least a 1-Liter water bottle (that you can refill halfway through at TreePeople) and a bag/container if you want to harvest any edible weeds to take home!
Where do I park?
There is a busy parking lot at the base of the trail that will probably be full on a Saturday morning. I know of free & unrestricted street parking nearby (like a 5 minute walk to the trailhead) and will share that information with you the day before.
Are there bathrooms?
Yes, there are public bathrooms at the trailhead and also halfway through the hike at TreePeople. There are water fountains in both locations as well.
