What happens when Washington reshapes one of America’s most prominent cultural institutions? The Bench and Jones Street Salon invite you to an intimate conversation with artist and curator Josef Palermo as he speaks publicly about what he witnessed inside the Kennedy Center during one of the most politically charged periods in its history. We’ll unpack the fallout from his widely discussed exposé in The Atlantic, the cultural reckoning it ignited, and the increasingly unavoidable question facing artists, institutions, and anyone working in public life: How far should we go in collaborating with people—or institutions—whose politics we fundamentally oppose? Guiding the conversation is journalist and novelist Brian Schaefer, whose work spans arts, culture, politics, and social issues, with writing in The New York Times, The New Yorker, New York Magazine, and several publications without “New York” in the title. He is an NEA Arts Journalism Fellow and former U.S. State Department Arts Ambassador. This will not be a panel filled with talking points. Expect candor, disagreement, insider stories, and the kind of conversation usually reserved for private dinners and green rooms. 6:00 PM — Arrive & join us at the bar 6:45 PM — Program begins 7:45 PM — Drinks & discussion ıllıllııllıllııllıllııllıllııllıllııllıllııllıllııllıllııllıllııllıllııllıllııllıllııllıllııllı 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝔹𝕖𝕟𝕔𝕙 is a new space in New York’s Chinatown that sits at the nexus of culture & politics.
