Artist statement:
This exhibition is a deeply personal reflection on the act of constructing a sense of place in a world where ‘home’ is both a memory and a destination.
The artwork layers personal narratives - fragments of memories, poetry and journals, with objects - imbued with previous lives - to weave a deeply intimate tapestry.
The Persian rug is both a tangible link to the artist’s childhood, and a metaphor for the intricacies of tradition and cultural identity. In some works, the rug conceals the challenging emotions 'swept under the rug'; in others, it weaves new narratives, painting a future rich with possibilities.
The use of simple home-improvement materials - e.g. plaster and paint brushes - speak to the fundamental labor inherent in the creation of 'home.'
This mixed-media approach, combining the intricate patterns and vibrant colors of the rug with written words in Farsi and English, highlights the duality of tradition and transformation, honoring cultural roots while embracing the ever-evolving journey of self-discovery and belonging.
